‘The Fancy Navajo’ brings Diné cuisine to the national stage

Alana Yazzie’s culinary career as The Fancy Navajo, known for bringing Diné culture to millions across the country, actually began with fashion.

Originally from Fruitland, New Mexico, Yazzie started her social media page to showcase bright, colorful clothing along with occasional posts about Navajo food. The blend of traditional Diné style and cuisine became more than a hobby, eventually leading to national recognition. Recently, her culinary work reached a wide audience through the Food Network.

She appeared on the network’s social media series “#diginwith,” on which she demonstrated how to make her “Navajo Magic Bread” on Nov. 4. She calls it Navajo Magic Bread “because one versatile dough magically makes tortillas, biscuits and frybread,” according to the Food Network.
