The Navajo Department of Corrections, simply put, is in dire straits.

Last year, Navajo Nation Police handled 16,452 public intoxication, or PI, calls across the reservation, with each call lasting an average of two hours. And it seems that trend will continue.

According to an emergency coordinator and acting director for the Navajo Nation Department of Emergency Management, the system has been “live” since the new year began.
