Bus safety requires help of parents, other drivers

GANADO

According to staff at the Ganado Unified School District’s transportation department, bus safety depends not just on bus drivers but also on other drivers and the broader community.
As National School Bus Safety Week drew to a close Oct. 23, Ganado bys drivers got ready to head out to get students home from school. They checked tires, looked under hoods, and adjusted mirrors to ensure safety for the trips.

In an interview, Fred Yazzie, a bus driver for 22 years, said his job requires more than safe driving, keeping the students on the bus safe, and bringing precious cargo from point A to point B.

It requires an understanding of bus safety and rules between him and the K-12 grade students he transports helps those aboard stay safe.

He added that other drivers on the road can help keep children and young people safe, particularly by not trying to pull around a bus with a flashing stop sign so students can cross the road. He said some drivers even run the sign despite state law, which requires drivers to stop and let passengers cross the road.
