From being a statistic to collecting them: Coalmine Canyon native headed to Oxford

Teen mom, high school dropout, alcohol abuser … “I’ve been a statistic,” says Molita Yazzie, “many times over.”
Perhaps that’s what drew her to her present career in sociology, which involves a lot of collecting and interpreting statistics.
And then this summer, Yazzie became a statistic again, but in a good way: She is the first person to receive a new scholarship for Native Americans to an environmental and social justice program at England’s Oxford University.
“I’ve dreamed about an Ivy League education and studying abroad,” said Yazzie, who demurely describes her age as “mature.” “But for someone who grew up the way I did, a place like Oxford was off the radar.”
