Alleged bank robber tells FBI he was “running an errand”

CHINLE

The man accused of robbing the Wells Fargo Bank in Chinle Monday reportedly told an FBI agent he didn’t know he was robbing a bank.

According to the complaint filed yesterday by FBI Special Agent Ryan C. Thornton, who investigated the case, Cristobal Andres, 39, address unknown, said another individual had given him a slip of paper and told him to take it to the bank and give it to the teller. Andres said he didn’t read the note, but the teller then gave him some money.

Andres allegedly told Thornton he thought he was “running an errand.”

Andres was arrested about 6 p.m. Monday after apparently changing his clothes at a gas station and hiding out at a residence in Chinle after the 11 a.m. robbery. He made his first appearance on a federal charge of bank robbery in U.S. District Court in Flagstaff this morning.

He was appointed an attorney pending a financial affidavit and ordered to be temporarily detained. A detention hearing and preliminary hearing are set for Monday.
The charge is in connection with the robbery of $1,833 from the Wells Fargo Bank in Chinle Monday.

According to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court, Flagstaff, yesterday, a man matching Andres’ description walked into the bank about 11 a.m. Monday and handed a teller a note demanding all the money in the cash drawer. She gave it to him while her supervisor attempted to activate the silent alarm with her foot, but the alarm didn’t work.
