Lawmakers spent hours questioning election officials July 2 before unanimously approving about $291,200 in supplemental funding for the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors and the Navajo Election Administration.
Delegate Carl R. Slater, the vice chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, introduced Legislation 0094-26 by acknowledging concerns about the upcoming election.
“Our elections are critical, and I know colleagues do have some questions related to the upcoming election,” Slater said. “This is an opportunity to get those addressed on the record so that we can move forward with an efficient and accountable election.”
The legislation originally sought $150,000 from the Unreserved, Undesignated Fund Balance for the election board to continue work on the 2025 Council reapportionment plan and the 2026 general election.
Slater said board stipends had been budgeted for only half the fiscal year, a gap he said the Council intends to address in the next budget by making the stipends a fixed cost.
“If we’re going to give the office more money, we’ve got to make sure that we’re holding them accountable,” Slater said.
