Arizona, Navajo Nation, Hopi Tribe sign coal economy pact

Arizona, the Navajo Nation and the Hopi Tribe have signed a five-year agreement to coordinate economic planning for communities affected by coal mine and power plant closures, including preparations for changes that could come at the Four Corners Power Plant.
Gov. Katie Hobbs, Hopi Tribe Chairman Lamar Keevama and Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren signed the memorandum of understanding Aug. 11 in Phoenix. The agreement calls for coordination on workforce needs, economic development, future energy projects and assistance for coal workers and their families.
The three governments also agreed to share economic and workforce information, identify potential development opportunities and provide venues where coal-affected workers, families and communities can raise concerns. The MOU calls for planning before possible coal facility closures and continued coordination afterward.
