WINDOW ROCK

Council Delegate Eugenia Charles-Newton has submitted a letter withdrawing from the race for the 26th Navajo Nation Council after the San Juan County Clerk’s Office accepted her declaration of candidacy for magistrate judge in northwestern New Mexico.

Charles-Newton, who represents Shiprock and chairs the Law and Order Committee, will remain in office through the end of her term on the 25th Council.

In a handwritten letter dated Sept. 27, Charles-Newton asked the speaker’s office and election office to remove her name from the Council ballot. She later announced the decision publicly.

Her decision came after she received a letter from the San Juan County Clerk’s Office confirming that her Aug. 25 declaration of candidacy had been accepted. The letter stated that her name will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot as the Democratic candidate for magistrate judge in Division 2.
