Controller says hardship payments near as Navajo Nation financial risks grow

Controller Sean McCabe told the 25th Navajo Nation Council on Monday that about $7.8 million remains available for hardship payments to citizens and that his office expects to begin disbursing the money within the next month.
The announcement came as the Nation faces major financial liabilities, including a $5.6 million rent dispute tied to its Washington office, a $24 million ZenniHome contract that will likely have to be reverted to the federal government and $45.8 million in housing manufacturing funds that the CHID housing program has declined to discuss.
McCabe delivered the quarterly financial update on the first day of the spring Council session. Nearly a dozen delegates questioned him about the American Rescue Plan Act spend-down, the Enterprise Resource Planning system rollout, chapter accounting systems and the fiscal 2027 budget.
