Council orders change to housing aid rules

The Navajo Nation Council ordered Executive Branch officials Monday to remove eligibility requirements stricter than federal rules from a $55 million homeowner assistance program as a Sept. 30 deadline approaches for the Nation to obligate remaining funds.
The Council approved the directive 17-0 after about four hours of debate over the Homeowner Assistance Fund, federal COVID-19 relief money provided to the Navajo Nation in 2022 to help homeowners avoid losing their homes.
The program can cover delinquent mortgage payments, reduce mortgage principal, pay for home repairs, clear titles and lower interest rates. It does not cover rent or people who do not own their homes.
Native Community Capital, the Tempe firm hired by the Nation to administer the program, has also funded manufactured homes on tribal land when applicants own the home and comply with homesite lease requirements.
