Donovan Begay outlines veterans agenda, health care concerns at forum
FARMINGTON
Navajo Nation presidential candidate Donovan Begay said at a veterans forum on June 19 that the Nation needs to do more to help former service members navigate civilian life, access benefits and find stable housing.
Begay, a Marine Corps veteran, said one of the hardest parts of military service comes after discharge, when veterans must navigate civilian life on their own. He said college, paid for by the GI Bill, helped him regain structure after leaving the military.
“Going directly into the college, you kind of start to get back into the groove of the way society acts,” Begay said.
He said many veterans struggle not because of trauma, but because they are not told what benefits and services are available to them. He pointed to the GI Bill’s home-loan benefit, saying he was never told early on that it could help him buy a house.
