An internal investigation into Navajoland Nursing Homes Inc. identified nearly $146,000 in misappropriated or improperly managed funds involving a former financial executive and found that the organization owed more than $3.5 million to an account established for a veterans nursing home project, according to a report commissioned by its board of directors.
The 22-page report, obtained by the Navajo Times, and dated Sept. 11, details financial misconduct involving former Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer Beau Natay and former Chief Executive Officer Wayne Claw at the Dr. Guy Gorman Sr. Care Home in Chinle.
Investigators found that Natay submitted fraudulent invoices, overpaid himself through payroll and used company credit cards to transfer money to accounts he controlled. They also determined that Claw knew about some of the misconduct months before Natay left the organization but failed to discipline him or restrict his access to financial accounts.
Natay resigned July 26, and the board terminated Claw on Sept. 11. The organization also ended its independent contractor arrangement with George Atcitty, who performed financial duties for the nursing home, according to the report.
