Man dies in head-on with train

The McKinley County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday a Fort Defiance man died when his vehicle collided head-on Sunday with a train west of Gallup.

The man, Arvin D. Bain, 45, reportedly got on the railroad tracks at the Tsayatoh crossing and drove on the tracks in an eastward direction until he was hit by the train which was westbound.

The engineer on the train said he saw the car headed in his direction and sounded his horn several times but the car kept coming. Deputies later found the vehicle almost seven tenths of a mile from the crash site.

Bain was pronounced dead at the scene.

The engineer said he also saw a passenger in the car dive out before the crash but deputies were unable to find any trace of that person.

Deputies have also been unable to determine if Bain was intoxicated at the time, although cans of beer was found in the vehicle after the crash.
