Shiprock voters cast ballots Tuesday at a new polling site in the Central Consolidated School District administration building after the Shiprock Chapter house was deemed unsafe for occupancy.
The parking lot was crowded as voters turned out for the Navajo Nation general election following recent heavy rainfall and increased flows in the San Juan River.
Virginia Nelson, a voter registration specialist with the Navajo Election Administration’s Northern Agency, said the polling site was moved to the district’s boardroom because the chapter house was unsafe for occupancy.
The administration building also served as a San Juan County voting center for the state and federal elections, adding to foot traffic outside both polling locations.
Improving the Navajo Nation’s aging infrastructure was on Shiprock resident Clayton Benally’s mind when he voted.
