Utah brings nuclear energy push to White Mesa near uranium mill

Utah is bringing its nuclear energy campaign to White Mesa on Saturday, holding an all-day informational event about nuclear power about three miles from the country’s only operating conventional uranium mill.
“Plug into Utah’s Plan for Nuclear Energy” runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 15 at the White Mesa Community Center in San Juan County. The event is part of a statewide outreach effort tied to Operation Gigawatt, Gov. Spencer Cox’s 2024 initiative to double Utah’s power production over the next 10 years.
Tracy Rees, a deputy director at the Utah Office of Energy Development, said the office has been holding events in every county and is extending the effort to what she called the state’s tribal partners.
Carma Claw, the president at Aneth Chapter, said organizers worked through chapter leadership to determine which topics to cover.
“Because this is, from what I understand, a state of Utah initiative, all Utah chapters have been invited,” Claw said in an interview.
