Tsé Yi’ Gai teams hanging tough despite lack of games

The final score from Saturday night’s game with Red Valley-Cove will show yet another loss for the Tsé Yi’ Gai boys basketball team.

What it won’t reflect is the sheer satisfaction of actually playing the game.

Because of issues beyond their control, the players that makeup the boys and girls basketball teams have spent less time on the court than their counterparts.

“We had a few games cancelled and it was weather-related,” Tsé Yi’ Gai coach Vinton Werito said following their 80-47 loss on Saturday night to the Miners.

The girls, meanwhile, evened its record at 6-6 with a 56-44 win.

Werito said while most schools around the area have played roughly 16-17 games this season, the Diné Warrior team played its 12th match on Saturday night.

“We’re struggling to get our kids some game time experience,” said Werito, whose team dropped to 2-10 overall. “That is where the kids really see what they need to work on.”
