Unprecedented: Rezbombers make history by winning three consecutive NABI titles

Inside a jam-packed Phoenix College gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, the Rezbombers girls basketball team continued its dominance in the Native American Basketball Invitational.

The Rezbombers bombarded Native Soldiers with 13 treys en route to a 65-51 in the championship game with incoming Kirtland Central High junior Allyson Tsosie burying six 3-pointers in the second half.

The latest title was Rezbombers third consecutive crown at the annual tournament. With that, they have won four of the previous five championships.

“It’s something that’s never been done, so it’s one thing that we were chasing,” Rezbombers coach Brian Kaye said of three-peating. “I mean, the energy, and the buy-in from the girls is what made it happen.”

Buoyed by several playmakers, the Rezbombers were led by Tsosie as she poured in 20 of her 22 points in the second half. After scoring a quiet two points in the opening half, the KC guard came alive from the perimeter.

“In the first half, I wasn’t making anything, so I knew in that in the second half that I had to keep my confidence up,” Tsosie said. “I just launched it and when my first one went in, I just kept shooting.”

Farmington High graduate Kjani Anitielu added 21 points as she put in 14 of those points in the opening half as the Rezbombers took a 31-23 halftime cushion thanks to a late 9-3 run.
