WR football picks up steam heading into 3A North
WINDOW ROCK
The state of the Window Rock football team hit a new high last Friday night.
The Scouts posted a 20-12 win over the Holbrook Roadrunners as they improved to 3-2 overall heading into tomorrow’s home contest with Monument Valley.
“Last year we didn’t win any games so this a big win for us,” Window Rock coach Wilbur Begay Jr. said. “Every win is big for us and we want to send our seniors out right this season.”
Begay said the last time a Window Rock football team beat Holbrook was during the 2014 season under then-coach Greg Barker. That year the Scouts finished the season 7-3. Since then the Scouts endured three straight losing seasons, including a pair of winless records.
“We’ve built some momentum and we’ll try to keep it rolling,” Begay said.
Begay said his team scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter with running back Naataah Chief scoring the first one from three yards out.
The Scouts next score happened thanks to the defense. Window Rock picked off a pass from Holbrook’s quarterback. A few plays later senior Cobren Nez gave the Scouts a 12-0 cushion at the half.
“It was huge for us to score real quick,” Begay said. “Our defense helped make that happen.”
In the second half, Begay said the Roadrunners made the game interesting with two scoring drives.
“We had some blown coverage and they took advantage of it,” he said. “That’s something we can fix.”
