Navajo Technical University team roper Benji Sam and bull rider Archie Becenti Jr., both expect the competition to be stern and competitive during next week’s 2016 College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.

Today’s top college rodeo hands will convene at Casper Events Center, June 12-18 to determine collegiate world champions.

After a grueling rodeo season, Sam qualified as a heeler in the team roping and Becenti earned a ticket to the college finals in the bull riding. Sam finished tied for second with roping partner, header Lucas McKenzie of New Mexico State University. Team ropers Sam and McKenzie each netted 571 points. Becenti completed the regular Grand Canyon Region standings in third place with 530 points.

NTU Athletic Director George LaFrance, who will accompany the two rodeo athletes to Casper, said Sam and Becenti both worked endless hours throughout the season.

“I know they will give it everything they have at the College National Finals Rodeo,” LaFrance said. “I am very proud that they are doing well in school, hitting the books and competing in the rodeo arena at a very high level at the same time. I believe in our Navajo Technical University athletics. Navajo Technical University is where students can make their own history.”

Both cowboys will compete in three rounds. The top 10 finishers in each event will come back to compete in the short go.
