FORT DEFIANCE
It’s been a record setting year for Crownpoint senior McKenzie Tsosie.
On Saturday, Tsosie rebroke his personal record for the fourth time this season when he got his javelin to fall 144 feet, 2 inches inside the throwing sector during the Window Rock Twilight meet.
“That’s a new PR and I didn’t know that I was going to go over 144 feet,” Tsosie said.
The Crownpoint thrower admitted that this season has been surreal as he is one of a few local athletes to surpass the 140-foot mark. His rise started in his first meet when he threw the 800-gram spear 138-10 during the Tigers Invitational on March 7 at Los Lunas High School. At that meet, he beat the New Mexico Class 3A state qualification mark of 135-04.
He then hit 140-01.50 during the Dulce Invitational on March 28.
Two weeks ago, he reset his PR at 143-03 during the Angelo DiPaola Invitational on April 11. On Saturday, he reset it again with 144-02.
“I’ve been beating my PRs by like two feet,” Tsosie said. “I’m quite surprised because I’ve taken some weeks off throughout the season doing other events.”
Tsosie started throwing the javelin his sophomore year. He hit a PR of 107-08 during the District 1-3A meet with a fourth-place finish as he missed out on making state.
During his junior campaign, Tsosie was crowned the district champion with a throw of 120-01. At the state meet, he hit a PR of 124-08 as he placed 11th overall.
This season, he’s been consistently hitting over 135 feet, which ranks him in the top 25 statewide regardless of classification according to Athletic.net.
As for the Class 3A level, he is leading the state with his 144-02 effort. East Mountain’s Zane Conklin has the second-best throw at 132-03.
“I’m looking to win state,” Tsosie said. “Basically, after I hit 138 in my first meet, I wanted to hit over 140 and I think I can win state with those kinds of throws.”
In addition to throwing the javelin, Tsosie also competes in the open 400 and the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams.
In Saturday’s meet, the 4×200 placed fifth with a time of 1:48.19. The team consists of Isaiah Torres, Liam Kalleco, Kindale Billah and Tsosie.
In the 4×100, Crownpoint finished in sixth place with a time of 50.28 as that team had Torres, Kalleco, Tsosie and Lanceson Etsitty run a leg.
“We’re still working with our handoffs,” Tsosie said. “If we had better handoffs, we probably would have our time down by.”
Crownpoint is scheduled to compete in the Robin Langer Classic for its final regular season meet on Saturday. Next week, the District 1-3A meet will be held at Kirtland High School on Saturday, May 2 with the top two placers at the district meet earning its ticket to state meet. The New Mexico Class 3A meet is scheduled for May 8-9 in Albuquerque.
“Navajo Prep is leading the 4×100 and Tohatchi is the team to beat in the 4×200,” Tsosie. “I think our best chance is in the 4×200 because we’re right behind Tohatchi.”
