Andy Yazzie repeats as 10K champion
NARBONA PASS, N.M.
Andy Yazzie, Navajo Technical University cross-country head coach, repeated as the 10K champion at the 36th annual Narbona Pass Classic last Sunday under ideal racing conditions.
Yazzie completed the grueling course in 36 minutes, 40 minutes, which featured Ole’ Sandy, Backbreaker Hill and Goat Hill.
Race co-founder Chester Carl said there were 720 registered runners with 350 competing in the 10K while 379 signed up for the 5K.
“The turnout was excellent,” Carl said. “We had competitive races. We had racers from all over. Everyone looks forwards to the race.”
A tee shirt was presented to each official entrant. The top 10 female and male 10K finishers were given sweats. The overall male and female winner received a championship trophy and $200 gift card from ASICS.
The second to fifth place finishers in the 10K race were presented with a trophy. In the 5K race, the top three in each age division were given trophies as well.
Arizona high school state champion Adriano Joe, of Pinon, topped New Mexico high school state champion Niles Thomas, of Miyamura, in the 5K race.
Joe was clocked in 18:25, which was 20 second faster than Thomas.
