Whitehorse High School freshman Alicia Dixon placed fourth at the Utah 1A State Cross-Country Championships on Oct. 21 in Salt Lake City.

Two runners from the Whitehorse cross-country team earned all-state honors at the Utah 1A State Cross-Country Championships.

Whitehorse freshman Alicia Dixon and senior Rafael Begaye placed fourth and fifth in their respective races to earn those accolades at the state meet, which was held on Oct. 21 at Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City.

The top seven runners in each class earn all-state honors as Begaye picked his second consecutive postseason award. Last year he placed sixth overall.

“Rafael has been running for six years so he’s one of my really experienced runners,” Whitehorse coach James Lewis said. “He’s a dedicated runner but he’s also a big fan of running.”

In fact, Lewis said Begaye is known to talk about his favorite runners nationwide and sometimes he’ll suggest different running videos to others for motivation.

“He’s a fan of running,” Lewis said of his pupil. “He’s willing to help out other runners and he’ll do whatever he can to help them improve.”

As for Dixon, the Whitehorse coach said she is fairly new to sport and for most of the season she was battling some health issues that prevented her from competing.
“It was a challenge for her,” Lewis said. “At the beginning she had to be pulled out of a few races and she was not able to practice with us for a large part of the season.”

But towards the end of the season, she got her breathing down and she competed fairly well in her races.
