FARMINGTON

The Piedra Vista High School volleyball team swept yet another opponent on Tuesday, but it didn’t feel like it.

The Panthers, who are known to shut teams down, offering little hope for a comeback, did not play with the talent their coach knows they possess.

Piedra Vista head coach Ron Becker said he was happy for his team’s 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-12) victory over cross-town rivals Farmington, but not with the fashion they accomplished it in.

“We were off a little bit tonight; I’m a little bummed out with the way we played tonight,” he said. “We play much better than that and they get here, and they get in their heads because it’s Farmington, so it’s a big psychological thing.”

Though the two teams are no longer in the same district and class, the rival continues to remain strong.

Becker said his team lost four players to graduation, but he also had a group of girls who moved up to fill those spots.

He said they have done a good job so far as a team which is why he expected more out of them, but he adds that it wasn’t entirely their fault.

“We’re trying so hard because it’s Farmington, because of the competition thing, they make mistakes. Instead of just relaxing and playing the way they can play they’re trying to make everything perfect,” Becker said. “I probably put some pressure on them too, so I’ll take part of the blame with that.”

The Panthers had a rough start in the match. They had some missed serves that allowed Farmington opportunities.

Piedra Vista eventually gained some momentum to finish out the first match on top 25-14.

The rough patch extending in Game 2. Piedra Vista jumped ahead with their serves and led 10-4 before Farmington went on a 6-0 run, gaining points mostly off of the Lady Panther’s mistakes.
