FORT DEFIANCE
The third-ranked Tuba City volleyball team stunned Window Rock in 3A North Region action Tuesday night.
The Lady Warriors faced a 14-12 deficit in the fifth and deciding set, but they scored the last four points to pull out a come-from-behind win. The set scores were 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-8, 16-14 at the Bee Hółdzil Fighting Scouts Events Center in Fort Defiance.
“First of all, Window Rock did a great job,” Tuba City coach Kristen Balcerek said. “I mean, they were just really scrappy, and you could clearly see that they wanted to win, so kudos to them.
“On our side of the court, we just didn’t come in ready to play and I think that hurt us mentally in sets one and three,” she added. “Overall, we just need to be more consistent on our side because the girls can play at a high level, but they just have to be there mentally. I think they stepped onto the court not really prepared in that way.”
After trading side outs early in the fifth set, Window Rock used a 4-0 run to go up 9-6 following a kill by freshman opposite hitter Alicia Spencer, who splits the setting duties with junior Teaghan Nez.
