Newcomb seniors mentoring new wave of wrestlers

SHIPROCK, N.M.

Newcomb High School wrestlers Winston Moses and Alexzander Allen have a much bigger job than picking up wins.

The two seniors are the leaders of Newcomb’s wrestling team; Moses has a record of 16-2 in one weight class and 4-1 in another, while Allen is carrying a 20-2 individual record.

But to the two of them, the victories they hold are nothing compared to the satisfaction they get from knowing they’re helping the next generation of Newcomb wrestlers.

“Newcomb’s a small community, there’s not that much help like other schools … they have JV teams, it’s just really isolated and there’s not much we can do,” Moses said. “I just want to get the most out of my senior year.”

Moses is no stranger to success.

The state contender, who moves between weight classes, works on his craft while helping the younger group of wrestlers on the team.
“The team is barely rebuilding,” he said. “I’m helping others too, so they can get ready for their senior year.”

Moses has performed on the big stage since he was a sophomore and has matured along side Allen.

Allen has wrestled since he was in the third grade, but started on the varsity team as an eighth grade student.

He also took an interest in helping those younger than he.

He said helping others has helped him along as well.

“I want to help other guys start out new,” he said. “I grew myself while helping them.”

The maturity the two have shown is one that has not gone unnoticed.

While many might not see how the two have flourished into the leaders they are, they’re growth can be other wise seen on the mat.
Newcomb head coach Tom Yazzie said the two have stepped up their game individually and for the team.

“They’re doing real well so far and hopefully they stay healthy and keep doing as well as they are,” Yazzie said. “Winston is more disciplined, more conditioned. Just a good, smart wrestler, same for Alex.”
