Over the summer, Tyann Layton won multiple round-robin showmanship competitions at various fairs. Each time, she enjoyed the win for about five minutes before turning her attention to the next one.
“That’s been kind of the process for me where I put it the past and I work hard for the next one,” Layton said during last week’s Navajo Nation Fair Junior Livestock Show at the Lorene C. Lee Pavilion.
Layton, who represents the Heritage Stock & Roots 4-H Club, beat three of her peers Thursday afternoon to win this year’s showmanship award at the annual fair.

Tyann Layton keeps her focus on large-animal judge Cary Crist as she shows an ewe owned by Phallen Carlston during round-robin showmanship at the 2026 Navajo Nation Fair Junior Livestock Show in Window Rock. Layton won the fair’s showmanship award, beating three other finalists.
“I think this one is super special,” she said. “This one just means a lot because coming into this, our family faced a lot of challenges, you know, big and small. It kind of felt like everything was not going the way it was, but if you have strong faith and testimony, you can get through and overcome anything.”
The competition drew 151 market-animal entries, including goats, pigs, lambs and cattle.
