Expect to see plenty of pink at the fair

TUBA CITY

The 47th annual Western Navajo Fair manager does not want to talk about it nor does he not want to be reminded that breast cancer is a very personal, agonizing encounter with an ideological force that some of the women in his family have had to endure.

“Me and her were like peas and carrots,” said fair manager Mike Sixkiller about one of his late grandmothers. “But it took her … from us. I know it happened and it’s been about 10 years.”

Though he’s still not comfortable talking about it, Sixkiller said the color pink has a significant meaning behind it: breast cancer awareness.

Pink ribbons are most commonly seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. And this year, pink ribbons and other breast cancer awareness decorations will trim the community during the Western Navajo Fair this weekend.
