Funding delays cloud diabetes program support

Vice President Richelle Montoya and Radeanna Comb, the program manager for the Navajo Special Diabetes, raised concerns this week about delays in diabetes funding that continue to affect services in tribal communities, even after Congress set the Special Diabetes Program for Indians at $200 million for fiscal 2026.
The issue came up during the recent Indian Health Service Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee meeting, where Navajo officials said the full amount has not yet reached programs. According to a news release, about $150 million is being distributed while roughly $50 million is still not fully reaching programs, creating uncertainty for staffing, services and long-term planning.
