A summer running and fitness camp program for Diné youth will continue this month with stops in Chinle, Ganado and Newcomb.
The free Navajo Nation Running and Fitness Camps are open to youth ages 6 to 18 and are held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to a news release.
The camps are part of a partnership between the Navajo Nation and Wings of America, a nonprofit that works with Native youth through running.
The program has reached hundreds of youths this summer in Montezuma Creek, Shiprock, Tó Hajiileehé, Crownpoint, Fort Defiance and Tohatchi, according to the release.
President Buu Nygren and Sherylene Yazzie, the executive director of the Navajo Department of Health, visited the Tohatchi camp, where camp facilitators received “Presidential Recognition” certificates. Dustin Martin, the chief visionary officer of Wings of America, also was recognized.
The schedule includes Chinle High School on July 8 and 9, Ganado High School on July 15 and 16 and Newcomb High School on July 20 and 21.
The camps are supported by the Navajo Department of Health, Wings of America, the Navajo Special Diabetes Program, Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country, the Division of Behavioral and Mental Health Services, local schools and community organizations.
