The bad news: Between 10,000 and 10,500 acres of the Defiance Plateau forest has burned since the Wood Springs 2 fire began five days ago.

Nelson Benally, 65, who was evacuated from his summer sheep camp on Monday, said he saw the lightning that started the Wood Springs 2 fire.

The Wood Springs Two Fire is not contained.

Strong winds aided by dry conditions overwhelmed fire crews battling the Wood Springs 2 fire on Sunday afternoon.

About 60 wildland firefighters from BIA Navajo, Lassen, Silver State, Nevada, BIA Helitak, U.S. Forest Service, BLM and a Neptune firefighting plane capable of dropping 3,000 gallons of fire retardant, two helicopters and two additional smaller planes have been on scene working on burning the fire out.
