“Together We Are Healthy” was the theme for the National Family Careers of America (FCCLA) Leadership conference, held in Washington D.C. during the week of July 5 – 9.
Two students from Monument Valley High School (Utah), Meka Laws and Erwin Cly, along with their advisor, Antoinette Dee, attended this exciting and patriotic week. Students and advisors had the opportunity to attend general sessions and various workshops, visit exhibits and take time to get acquainted with other FCCLA students.
Besides celebrating the nation’s birthday, FCCLA members also celebrated FCCLA’s birthday, which marked 70 years as an organization. This milestone was covered by a special “70 Years Strong” advocacy event on Capitol Hill.
MVHS students did some sightseeing by visiting various museums and monuments in our nation’s capital.
Laws said her highlight was being able to see firsthand Amelia Earhart’s airplane in the Air and Space Museum and the original Declaration of Independence documents in the National Archives. Cly was impressed by all the museums but his favorite was also the Air and Space Museum.
Utah was well represented with 211 students and 92 advisors/chaperones.
Out of the 211 students, 171 competed in Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) events. Laws competed in FCCLA chapter website, (she designed MVHS FCCLA website) and earned a bronze medal.
Cly judged the Illustrated Talk STAR events.
MVHS FCCLA advisor, Mrs. Dee was selected among the nationÕs applicants to receive the National FCCLA Integration of Core Academics award. This is a prestigious honor that entails a FCCLA advisor to design and implement FACS lesson plans that integrates language arts, math, science and social studies.Ê For the past several years MVHS has been successful in taking qualified students to national competition.
Laws is the daughter of Scott and Alexa Laws and Cly is the son of Erwin and Lola Cly. Both students reside in Monument Valley.
The success of FCCLA organization at Monument Valley High is due in part to the enthusiasm of the students who are willing to make this program viable by holding their monthly meetings/activities, setting goals, participating in region and state STAR events, and national programs.
The sponsorship of RGJ, Inc (Gouldings), Children At Risk Foundation, Oljato Chapter and San Juan Foundation and the ongoing support of the parents enables the FCCLA students at MVHS to participate in these and other activities.
