Alexander Chambers calls for faster business growth in Navajo presidential bid

DÁ’DEESTŁ’IN HÓTSAA

Alexander Chambers says the Navajo Nation does not need more authority to build its economy. It needs a president who can move faster.

Chambers, a Shiprock native and Farmington restaurant owner, is one of 16 candidates running for Navajo Nation president in a field that includes President Buu Nygren, Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley and two former vice presidents.

His campaign centers on business development, water control, energy control and faster government action. Chambers said Diné leaders already have federal and tribal authority to support local business growth but have not used it effectively.

“We don’t need more laws,” Chambers said, “we need execution.”

Chambers pointed to the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Home Ownership Act and the Navajo Nation Code Title 5 (commerce and trade) as existing authorities that could support a stronger business climate.
