Dayish returns, selling stability against years of gridlock

TSAILE, Ariz.

The fights Frank Dayish Jr. is campaigning on, unsettled water rights, a federal government slow to honor its treaty obligations, the churn of energy development pressing against the Nation’s borders and the defense of Diné culture and religion, are the same ones he wrestled with two decades ago as vice president of the Navajo Nation.

In an interview after a candidate forum here Tuesday, Dayish, who wants to return to the Nation’s highest office, summed up his bid in one word, stability. After years of lawsuits and gridlock he says have paralyzed the government, the former vice president is selling experience spanning a Bush-era vice presidency and decades of leadership in the Native American Church.

“The main concern that I have is stability. We want to ensure that we bring progress back to the Navajo Nation,” Dayish said.

To illustrate, Dayish pointed to a measure he said he brought to the Navajo Nation Council four years ago through the Council of the Peyote Way of Life, which he chairs, even after three delegates introduced related legislation.
