Martin Luther King Jr. Day marks not only a day of celebration and remembrance but also a day of service.

On Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 a community clean up will take place in Navajo, N.M. Red Lake Chapter House has partnered with Red Lake-Navajo Community Action Group and Dzil Dit Looi (DEAP) Charter School to bring the community together in an effort to clean up graffiti, trash pick up/drop off and recycling. The event starts at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and volunteers can check in at Red Lake Chapter House. For more information contact Kayla Begay at (505) 488-3170.

In Window Rock, Ariz., Quality Inn’s Diné Restaurant will be hosting the King Holiday Celebration starting at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the conference room. The event includes a training session on Indigenous Rights as well as a March for Nonviolence from the restaurant to the Veterans Memorial park. In Gallup, N.M., two separate events will be held to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at 2 p.m., at the Children’s Branch of the Octavia Fellin Public Library there will be crafts, stories, poetry and music. On Monday, Jan. 19, 2015 at the Gallup Cultural Center a prayer circle will begin at 12:30 p.m. and following that will be a march from the cultural center to the Gallup Community Service Center. At the service center the program will continue with the posting of colors, singing and guest speaker Jennifer Adams of the National Kidney Foundation.
