9 chapters to vote for Council delegates

WINDOW ROCK

Nine chapters will be going to the polls on Tuesday to elect Council delegates.

Nelson Begay is facing Zane James in the race representing Lukachukai, Round Rock, Tsaile/Wheatfields, Tse Ch’izhi and Rock Point. Ben Bennett is facing Genevieve Jackson in the race to represent Fort Defiance, Crystal, Red Lake and Sawmill.

These races were originally scheduled to be among the Council races decided on Nov. 4 but one of the candidates in both races were disqualified just days before the election because they had been members of the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors.

The week before the election, the Navajo Nation Supreme Court held a hearing involving Chris Deschene who the court had ruled was ineligible to run for president because he failed to meet the requirement of being fluent in Navajo.

During the hearing, the court ordered the removal of all members of the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors for failing to adhere to an earlier Supreme Court ruling to remove Deschene from the ballot and put Russell Begaye on.
