OHA: Decision might come today on Begaye qualification

WINDOW ROCK

No decision today from the Office of Hearings and Appeals regarding Russell Begaye and the complaint filed against him for not being qualified to run for tribal president.

Staffers at the OHA said about 3 p.m. that a decision will come out on Monday, Nov. 24.

Myron McLaughlin, one of the losing candidates in the August primary, has accused Begaye of being disloyal tot he tribe because of his involvement in a suit filed by the shareholders of the Navajo Oil and Gas Company in federal court.

The shareholders were trying to overturn a decision by the Navajo Supreme Court.

McLaughlin cited tribal laws which said candidates for tribal president must show “unswerving loyalty” to the tribe.

Begaye testified during the OHA hearings that he would “die” before being disloyal to the tribe and said the lawsuit was filed against five individuals and not the Navajo Supreme Court or the Navajo Nation.
