FORT DEFIANCE

The best finish this cross-country season took place at the Window Rock Invitational as Piñon senior Antwan Clement captured his first win of the year.

The Piñon harrier held off Ganado runner Levi Kee at the finish line as both runners clocked in at 16:40 with Clement earning the individual crown during the 13-team meet on Friday morning in Fort Defiance.

“I felt myself slowing down, and I was trying to see where everybody was at,” Clement said, while adding that he sensed Kee was closing in.

Clement, who was coming off a fourth-place finish during the Canyon De Chelly Invitational two weeks ago, acknowledged that he got off to a great start as he traded the top spot with St. Michael senior Evans Tracy, who placed third overall at 16:54.

“I had a good pace, and I kept that pace,” Clement said. “I was going back and forth with the St. Michael runner until the last half-mile when I think he lost his shoe.”
