NEWCOMB, N.M.
There were no surprises on Saturday morning during the 2A District 1 cross-country meet as the Laguna Acoma boys captured the team title.
The LA boys placed four runners in the top 5 while its last scoring member placed eighth as the Hawks finished with 22 points.
Individually, Rehoboth senior Jonah Jones earned his first district crown as he took over the lead a half-mile into the race. He slowly built a nice cushion to beat out four LA runners.
Jones clocked in at 15:44.56 while LA junior Nicholas Vicente took second with a time of 16:08.
“For the past few years, I’ve always come up short at the district meet,” Jones said. “You know, Laguna has some phenomenal runners, and I ran with two of them early in the race, but I felt like this was my year.
“The biggest thing was patience, and it turned out the way I had hoped,” he added.
