HOLBROOK
Winslow senior Sonway Masayesva hit a new milestone by winning her first high school cross-country race in her career.
The Winslow harrier won the Holbrook Invitational with a time of 20:57.3, as she beat out a pair of Hopi runners in seniors Mylia Secakuku (21:06.2) and Brook Huma (21:21.1).
“This is my first time ever winning a race, but I was scared they were going to catch me,” Masayesva said. “I thought I was going to give up, but I kept my mind strong throughout the whole race and I was trying to block everybody out because it was starting to get to me. You know, everybody was screaming at me, and I was like ‘No, I got to stay locked in.’ And that is what I did.”
After running with her peers, Masayesva broke away from the pack near the clubhouse, which is roughly about a mile into the 5K course.
