Trailing by two touchdown scores in the early going did not rattle the Tuba City Warriors.
Instead, the Warriors leaned on each other to stun Alchesay (8-2) in the first round of the Arizona Interscholastic Association 2A bracket on Friday night with Tuba rallying with a historic 36-34 win.
“We’ve been in this situation twice before,” Tuba City coach Kalani Simeona said. “In Chinle, we came back, and we won where we held our composure.
“We also had a bad experience with Page, but in both instances, we learned from it,” he added. “I always tell my boys that it’s only a loss if we don’t learn from it. We just have to do the best we possible can and stay composed.”
The two-point win on Friday carried some significant weight for Simeona and the Tuba City program.
“It’s our first-ever playoff win,” Simeona said as his club improved to 7-3 overall.
