Ceremonial crowns open junior rodeo champions

Of the dozen peewee breakaway ropers, Jalyla Harrison was one of two contestants to catch her draw.
The 10-year-old earned the breakaway title in her division after she made a smooth run during the annual Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association Open Junior Rodeo on Saturday.
“It felt scary, like I wasn’t going to win,” Harrison said of her run of 5-plus seconds.
The Vanderwagen, New Mexico cowgirl said she timed everything right and when she caught her calf her horse, Jypsy, did what it was trained to do.
“She stopped when I roped it,” she said.
Harrison was one of a chock full of contestants that earned buckles for winning their events at Red Rock Park. Other peewee champions included Waylon Smith (steer riding), Mesa Marshall (barrels), Delshauna Ashley (poles) and Raegan Walraven (goats).
