Meet of Champions
Window Rock’s DuBoise, MV’s Wayne compete well at prestigious meet
FORT DEFIANCE
Two of the area’s top tracksters competed against Arizona’s best at the annual Meet of Champions Track and Field Championships at Brophy Prep High School track stadium in Phoenix.
Window Rock long distance runner Chamique DuBoise and Monument Valley hurdler and long jumper Kaitlyn Wayne turned in a good performance.
The Meet of Champions featured track and field state champions from Divisions I to IV.
DuBoise, who captured Division III 3200-meter state championship two weeks ago, crossed the finish line in third place. She was clocked in 11:20.62.
“I wasn’t satisfied with my time but overall I’m pretty happy with my performance,” DuBoise said. “I did the best I could on that day and it was a great way to end the season. It was all I could do. My pace was fast in the first mile and I paid for it in the second. It was one of those races you learn from.”
The race started out fast as DuBoise led the pack until the sixth lap. She said began to feel the pace.
“I fell back but I still turned in a strong performance,” she said. “I think I should have started out more conservatively. I used too much of my energy sticking with the lead pack. I got caught up in their pace.”
