FORT DEFIANCE

Wings of America junior men’s team, filled with young runners, proved they can compete nationally.

Competing against the best runners in the United States, Wings of America junior men’s team garnered the program’s 25th National Championship at the USA Cross-Country Championships in Boulder, Colo., last Saturday.

“I was satisfied with the effort I saw our junior men gave, but I feel that the majority of the team underperformed when you look at what many of them accomplished during competition this past fall,” said Wings of America program director Dustin Martin. “I think a few of our male team members had the ability to run with the lead pack from the beginning of the race, but they chose not to.”

The junior women’s squad finished as national runner-up. Kokopalli Racing Team from Colorado Springs nailed down the national championship.

“I always hope that Wings’ athletes will surprise the field and contend with the lead pack for at least part of the race,” Martin said. “I thought with the team we recruited this year we had a very good chance of turning some heads in this way. In the end, however, most of our girls ran pretty even keeled and a conservative race. Much of the team is young. Hopefully, they can use this experience to give them the confidence they need to challenge the race leaders next year.”
