FORT DEFIANCE

The Monument Valley volleyball team has established itself as one of the teams to beat in the 3A North Region.

The Mustangs improved to 20-5 overall after sweeping Window Rock in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. In the opening game, the Mustangs got off to a slow start before winning 25-20, 25-15, 25-19, which counted as a freedom game. The set scores for the second game were 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 as that contest weighed in as a region game.

“We’re doing very well,”  Monument Valley coach Rennell Gilmore said. “It’s always important that we get our rest because we had a long week. We had three games this week and usually we’ll have two, so we had a long week.”

The region win improve MV’s record to 4-0 as they kept pace with the Tuba City Lady Warriors, which also owns a 4-0 mark in region play. The two squads played each other on Wednesday night as scores for that contest were not available as the paper went to print.
