There were plenty of teaching moments for the Kirtland Central volleyball team during their play at the Four Corners Honors Tournament, hosted by Farmington High.
The Lady Broncos had a chance to make the gold bracket, but they let a 10-point lead slip away against the Window Rock Lady Scouts during pool play.
The Scouts came back from an 18-8 deficit and won 27-26 as Window Rock split its two-game series with KC with the Broncos winning the first set 25-16.
The come-from-behind win earned Window Rock the top seed in their pool with a 4-2 record. Meanwhile, KC dropped to third behind Aztec as the two District 1-4A rivals went 3-3.
“That’s been our thing lately,” KC coach Nadia Begay-Watson said of their mental breakdowns. “It shouldn’t be that way because we have a bunch of seniors on the team. I mean, we were up 18-8 and you don’t play it safe.
“We didn’t play it safe up until that point because we were swinging away and getting the ball down,” she added. “It’s just those mental mistakes. We were freeing the ball over, and we were getting some hits into the net or out of bounds and a good team like Window Rock will take advantage.”
