A week after being pushed to four sets against Tuba City, the Monument Valley volleyball team left no stones unturned on Saturday night in the title game of the 3A North Region Tournament.
The second-seeded Warriors hung around in each set, but the No. 1 Mustangs showed its remarkable depth on the front line as MV overwhelmed Tuba in straight sets. The set scores were 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 before a large crowd at the Nash Center in Kayenta.
“Our mentality was to start strong and finish strong,” said MV outside hitter Tahnee Yazzie, who was named the 3A North Region Offensive Player of the Year. “We just wanted to finish them in three, so we had to fight for every point.”
As for her recognition, Yazzie said the award she received represents the countless hours she put into her craft, as she was one of the region’s most potent hitter by racking up 222 kills.
“It just shows how much work I put on the net, and how much I try to help my team,” Yazzie said. “I just try to put away every ball with every set I get.”
Yazzie was one of two MV players that led the Mustangs with 10 kills in the rematch with Tuba and she shared that honor with junior Blu Peterman.
