A Diné handwoven blanket crafted by Rock Point textile artist Naiomi Glasses now appears nationwide on an official U.S. Postal Service Forever stamp, placing Navajo textile art alongside major national icons in a 13-stamp collection curated by designer Ralph Lauren.
Glasses, a seventh-generation weaver from Tsé Ntsaa Deez’áhí, learned the craft on an upright loom alongside her brother Tyler Glasses Jr. under the instruction of their grandmother Nellie. She incorporates traditional Diné motifs into her textiles, including wedge weave patterns, dragonflies, Saltillo diamonds and four-directional crosses.
Glasses spoke about the responsibility of sharing Diné culture on a global platform during an interview with public radio station KNAU.
“It has been absolutely beautiful to be able to share a bit of our culture with people and to let people know that we as Indigenous peoples are still here,” Glasses said.
