BLUEWATER, N.M. – Brenda Hoskie remembers the moment that sparked her political awakening. As a child in the early 1980s, she stood with her mother at the Northern Navajo Nation Fair parade in Shiprock. Bill Richardson was running for Congress, and Hoskie’s mother leaned down and told her: “We’re going to vote for him.”
That moment became a touchstone—not just for Hoskie’s family, but for a lifelong commitment to public service that culminated over the weekend in her election as secretary of the Democratic Party of New Mexico.
A proud Diné woman from Springstead, New Mexico, near Church Rock Chapter, Hoskie’s ascension marks another stride for Diné representation within the top ranks of state political leadership. She won the position over the weekend after a ranked-choice vote by the Democratic Party’s State Central Committee, outpacing two opponents from urban districts.
