Lucille Cody-John had about a month to get the Navajo Nation’s oldest fair ready. She spent it chasing sponsors, clearing weeds and fixing health-code problems on the fairgrounds.
“We were crunched for time, and we’re doing what we can to get things going,” Cody-John, president of the Northern Navajo Fair Board, said in a Sept. 26 interview at the fair office, three weeks into the job and one week before opening day.
The 113th Northern Navajo Fair runs Oct. 1-4 under the theme “Rooted in Tradition, We Rise Together in K’é.”
Cody-John, who represents Aneth Chapter on the board, said this year’s fair puts young people first, followed by veterans and elders.
“I want the youth to be welcome,” she said. “I want them to know that they are a very important person that is part of the fair.”
