KAYENTA

Their limbs seemed to be in proportion. Their broken skin scarcely covered the intricate work of muscles and arteries beneath. And their grey hair tousled into a straight-out-of-the-grave look was flowing when they ran after human bait.

Some were miserable zombies. They dragged their bad leg like a prop, pointing in the opposite direction, behind them. Drag and step. Drag and step. It looked easy enough for the runners and walkers to stay ahead of it at the Dawn of the Rez Zombie Run over the weekend.

Others cocked their heads to one side, limped and surged forward with their arms outstretched toward their intended target, just as one might do if blindfolded.

About 20 zombies, most of them teenagers, stretched for miles along the course. There were zombie children, zombie hospital patients, zombie adults, and even a zombie football player with an ax head affixed to his helmet.

The disturbing display was all pretend of course, and participants said it was fun.
